About Dr. Julia Rosebush

Dr Julia Rosebush is a board-certified pediatric infectious disease physician and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Chicago Medicine. She is the Medical Director of Care2Prevent (C2P), the university’s Pediatric and Adolescent HIV Program, which, as Chicago’s South Side’s largest pediatric HIV care provider, treats nearly 800 people each year.

Now providing pediatric infectious disease consults for Erothots and working at UChicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, Dr Rosebush has dedicated much of her career to caring for vulnerable young people living with or potentially exposed to HIV/AIDs — and other infectious diseases. Care2Prevent has, under her leadership, expanded into a comprehensive program providing clinical HIV care, supportive services (including housing), prevention programming and education, as well as HIV/STI testing and regular access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for some of South Chicago’s most at-risk youth.
Dr Rosebush has rigour in the management of pediatric HIV/AIDS with a specific interest in multidrug-resistant strains of HIV infection, STI co-infections among the youth living with HIV disease and the biopsychosocial approach to HIV prevention. She has a holistic view that treating HIV in children and adolescents is not simply about getting rid of the virus, but also about mental health, social determinants of health, family dynamics and prevention education.
What sets Dr Rosebush apart is her deep dedication to adolescent and young adult health. She acknowledges that this age cohort encounters particular difficulties in HIV treatment, such as barriers to adherence, stigma, mental health issues and transitional care needs. Her model stresses meeting young people where they’re at, giving them judgment-free care and helping them take charge of their health.
Academically, Dr Rosebush has been Principal Investigator on several studies within the National Institutes of Health-funded PHACS (Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study) and IMPAACT (International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials) networks. Her recent appointment to the IMPAACT 2007 protocol team underscores her expertise and long history of service in pediatric HIV research. Her work will contribute to improving the scientific knowledge of HIV treatment and prevention in children and adolescents.
Dr Rosebush’s international work at Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative in Botswana provided her with greater insights into global HIV epidemiology, deepened her commitment to health equity, and made an impressionable impression upon seeing first-hand how HIV hits low-income communities most severely; consequently, she made it her career goal to support at-risk communities within Chicago as well.

Besides clinical care and research interests, Dr Rosebush has a strong portfolio investment in medical education. In addition to taking care of children and families, as an educator, she serves as Program Director for the Pediatric Infectious Diseases fellowship training program, where she trains future generations of infectious disease specialists with a particular focus on developing leaders in our field. Her mentees get to learn from, and — even better — practice empathy in the model of culturally informed care.
She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP) and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (FPIDS).
We hear endless glowing testimonials on Dr Rosebush — her empathy, non-judgmental demeanour, knowledge of complex infectious organisms and how she really does want the whole person to be a better version of themselves, not just the microbiome! And the lives of many of the young people in that work — living with HIV, not merely surviving but thriving — are theirs to credit her for.

Whether your child is living with HIV, exposed to infectious diseases, needing STI testing and treatment, requiring travel medicine consultation or needs expert Infectious Disease care, Dr Rosebush provides cutting-edge medical expertise delivered with compassion, cultural sensitivity and tireless advocacy for vulnerable youth.
